How to deal with them.

We’ve had a few comments asking how to dress emo when your parents are strict or how to stop them freaking out so we’re going to offer you some advice to help educate your parents without scaring them. It may even help to read through this with your parents.

Many parents have a hard time coping with their children’s dress sense or being a part of an alternative culture. This is especially true of parents with a more traditional background or different tastes. News stories don’t help the cause often scaring viewers into believing every emo kid or goth cuts themselves, thinks about suicide and worships the devil which is far from the true. Emo kids don’t harm themselves or think about suicide or the devil any more than any other kid. A geeky kid or even a popular kid is just as likely to think about self harming or feel depressed as someone who listens to emo music.

So how do you explain that to your parents that being an emo isn’t about being depressed and cutting yourself but is just who you want to be without freaking them out. The best way is to educate them with posts such as these explaining what the emo culture actually is and how you fit into it.

There’s many reasons people become emos, from the love of the fashion to relating to the music. Emo has been around in one form or another since the 70s so it is nothing new and nothing your parents should fear. Being an emo is the same as being into rap music or computer games or looking after animals, its something that ties you to other people through your love of something.

As we mentioned, self harming will be brought up by parents as well as other negative stereotypes which make the news but you will have to explain they are just that, stereotypes and not true of emos in most cases and certainly not true of why you want to be an emo. Just because someone does drunk driving doesn’t mean every driver is a drunk or everyone who gets drunk is going to start driving. Emos are actually quite positive, many emos are into giving out ‘Free Hugs’, not to strangers of course but making their friends feel wanted and appreciated. Emos are more in tune with their emotions than the average person, even if they can’t explain them they know something that does. Its certainly not bad to understand your feelings and finding ways of dealing with them either through music, being with friends or understanding you are not alone. Emos are also incredibly creative from drawing, to poetry to playing musical instruments, all of which are positive activities.

Your parents may mention its just a phase. True it may be, as you grow older your tastes in music, people and activities change but right now being emo is the phase for you and your parents need to let you grow to find out who you are. There is a middle ground to be found here, being allowed to do what ever you want is not the right way to live but finding your own tastes and making your own life experiences are.

They may also think you are depressed. You may possible be but not all emos are. Getting sad over someone we miss or something someone said does not make you depressed. Everyone is affected differently and emos are not all depressed. Most emo music covers relationships, life, work and fun, all things that everyone in the world gets happy and sad over so it is wrong to say all emos are depressed. In fact emos are probably some of the happiest and nicest people out there. In the UK clubbing scene rock and emo nights are a joy to be a part of as everyone gets along and helps each other out. In the Mosh pit no one is singled out and no one is hurt, everyone will look out for you. Compare this to trendy clubs where there are more often than not fights and arguments and being emo is much better than being a ‘normal’ person.

Being emo has nothing to do with being depressed. Depressed people do not become emos and emos do not become depressed by being emo.

Explaining your choices to your parents will often be difficult so it is best to discuss this with your parents in small stages. Don’t one day suddenly dye your hair black, put on make up and wear emo clothing as this will be a cause for concern from your parents. Why? Because it is a shock that happens so fast. Educating your parents by taking them to emo shops like Hot Topic or visiting sites like this one showing off the cool things emos are a part of will help explain your choices. Talk to your parents about bands you like and why they are so awesome, what they have achieved in their life and how they help people like you. Think of Hayley Williams from Paramore, she is emo but is a down to earth girl who is in a very successful band.

Being emo isn’t a form of rebellion but one of self expression. The same way you might be into computer games or like to draw tigers. At the end of the day its just clothes, hair and music and how harmful can that possibly be?

Don’t get defensive or aggressive when talking to your parents. This is very hard to do but it will not help your cause. Instead explain why you like the style, browse the clothing we offer here and show what items you’d like to buy and wear and most of all explain why. Finally try to compromise with them, you can wear some of the style if you keep up your home work or do good things like learning how to play the guitar. If your parents don’t want you wearing too much black find other colours that work well with black like vibrant red or pink.

We hope this guide helps both emos as well as their parents and if either of you have questions please leave a comment below (its free!) and you’ll get an answer.

The right pick for you.

Everyone loves guitar picks, even people who can’t play guitar but did you know they come in all different shapes, sizes, colours, materials and thickness? But what is the difference and what one is right for you.

Using different thickness’s and shapes will help you tinker with the sound of your guitar. Using a very thin pick produces a sound drastically different to a thicker heavier one. Many jazz guitarists tend to favour heavy pics (1.5 or 2mm) because it tends to thicken and darken the sound. A thinner gauge will give the guitar a much brighter sound although you may lose depth. You may also find a thinner and more flexible pick gives you more speed but this will be down to each individual.

If you are looking for faster rhythmic strumming then give a very thin pick a try. They are generally very flimsy but easy to manage. They are great when you need a bright fast sound.

A medium pick works better when your trying a slower more solid performance. The thickness tends to offer a more sustained and less percussive sound.

A thick pick will give you the feeling of more control as you ‘attack’ the strings without having to worry how the pick will act.

Its always a good idea to speak with friends and other guitarists about what picks they use and give them a try. Next time you are in your local music shop pick up a range of picks and practise with each of them to see what suits your playing style. Make sure picks you buy are of a good quality, a pick that breaks or has jaggy edges will results in the string not sounding right and may even damage your strings.

Picks come in different shapes too from the classic triangle shape to shark thin to two stuck together with a gap in between. Mostly these won’t alter how your music sounds but give them a try to see what suits your grip better.

Hair metal!

Did know one tell you? The 80s are back. Whether you want to dress like an 80s rocker for halloween or to recapture the glory days of rock we are here to help.

1. Check out Rock Bands from the 80s.

Checking out rock bands from the 80s will give you loads of ideas, from how they styled their hair to what clothes and accessories they wore. Get tips on how to do your make up from David Bowie or how to do your hair like Slade. Some suggestions of bands to check out.

Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Guns n’ Roses, AC/DC, Van Halen, Metallica, U2, INXS, Iron Maiden.

2. What is easy to buy

Some items may take longer to find than others so shop around. Markets are great places to pick up old clothes or fashion accessories. Try to take modern clothes and morth them into an 80s look to speed up looking like an 80s rocker.

3. What Rocker are you going to follow?

Some rockets went for sophisticated looks whilst others went for extreams. Decide if you are going to be a hard rocker, hair rocket, metal or pop rockers. If you want to be a girlie 80s rocker then look at people like Cyndi Lauper or Madonna to get some ideas.

4. Is it okay to wear band tees?

It sure is. Wearing band tees from the 70s or 80s is a quick way to get the 80s flair and wearing tight jeans which are once again back in fashion is a must. Don’t forget to keep your clothing black as well as your accessories.

5. Accessories

Spiked wristbands with black leather wrist straps are the order of the day. Wearing lots of badges on your jacket, jeans and bags is also a must. Grab as many badges as you can possibly find and if you can find anti government ones even better. Scarves that are solid in colour can also be worn but make sure they are light weight and not meant for winter wear. Studded belts are a great addition to any pair of tight jeans.

6. Check out vintage shops

We mentioned markets but you can’t forget vintage shops. Vintage clothing is very in fashion at the mo either from the era or reproductions so be careful you don’t spend too much.

7. Hairstyles

Having long hair or long spikes are the type of hair styles you need to achieve. Wigs are great if you are desparete to look like an 80s rocker quickly, if not grow your hair. Teasing your hair was very popular in the 80s, so make your hair as big as possible. Don’t forget the gel either, extra strong gel will keep your hair in place, perfect for spikes.

8. Learn how to apply makeup.

Even if you are a guy, learn how to apply makeup, this can be as little as eyeliner to make your eyes stand out to painting your nails or full face makeup. Rockers like David Bowie applied extream full face makeup and were still recognised as sex symbols amongst women so don’t be too shy to wear makeup.

Dating tips and help

So you’ve decided you want to date other emos. You’ve tried dating other guys or girls and you’ve found they just don’t share the same interests as you. So how do you get an emo girlfriend or boyfriend?

Like getting any girlfriend or boyfriend its not easy but lets start with the basics. First of all you need to find someone who is emo or likes emos. You may meet someone who doesn’t look or dress emo but deep down they are emo inside, they just haven’t realised it yet. So don’t always go for the looks first. Find out where local emos hang out, it may be down the skate park, in Hot Topic or loads of other random places. A quick search on facebook for emo groups in your area is a great place to start to find out where other emos hang out.

Before meeting anyone though, especially online make sure you are going to make friends first. Friendship often leads to relationship and it lets you fit into new groups better. If you are meeting people online or going somewhere new make sure people know where you are going and do try to go with some friends. Find out where other emos hang out and go and join them. Don’t be shy and say hello. Ask people what bands they are into and try to make new friends. Seeing emo bands is a great place to find other emos, especially as you know they like the bands you do as well.

Once you’ve made new friends you’ll hopefully have met at least one person you like a lot. Try talking to them, see what things you have in common and hopefully you are off to a good start. If they like bands you hate or you feel they may not quite be right for you then thats okay, you’ve still made a good friend and got to know them.

Talk about bands you like, compliment them on their clothes or read them some of your poetry, hopefully you’ll find something in common with the stuff you share about yourself. Be yourself and have your own thoughts and opinions, people wont hate you for liking different bands or clothes. Just be yourself and be normal, you don’t want to scare them away.

If you are a guy looking for an emo girlfriend then playing the guitar or being in a band will help make you more interesting as not only can you talk about your guitar you may find emo girls also play guitar and would love to play with you sometime.

Don’t forget to flirt either, if you know each other and want to do something cute then be cute. Don’t be scary and just see how they react. Be random and fun, there is nothing better than someone who you can share a joke with or mess about with.

Dating is very tough but if you aim to make friends first then you’ll always have a group of friends to be with and who knows what that friendship may develop into.

Write cool emo lyrics

The most important part of the emo scene and lifestyle is the music. Not how its played, not whos playing it but the lyrics.

Emo music has been around for years in different forms but its only after the early 2000′s that it really took off as popular music. In the last ten years emo music has changed from underground rebellious music listened to by a small group of people into a multi million dollar industry. The birth of the internet is what helped this take off, with many teenagers hitting up band message board and finding that their lives were not so different after all.

Songs were shared, bands were talked about but it is the lyrics that brought everyone together. From My Chemical Romances ‘I’m Not Okay (i promise) to Fall Out Boys Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, the lyrics are what made people identify and feel part of something bigger. You no longer felt alone, trapped by yourself as you knew other people and even bands were going through what you felt. Emo music is peoples unique takes of life and how they live it. Whether it consists of bands singing or screaming, talking about relationships, breakups or other emotional events, there is someone out there who can relate and it makes them feel better by being able to relate and share that with others.

Emo lyrics are often backed up by aggressive rock guitars or drum beats but emo can be subtle with pianos in the background or softer moods. Not everything is about death and pain, its about being emotional, and that means it can also be happy and fun.
